Brazilian Butt Lift
In the last 10 years, significant advancements in the proper handling, collection, and transfer of fat has allowed for a more predictable and safer procedure. With fat grafting, fat is harvested from unwanted excess deposits via Liposuction. The harvested fat is processed to eliminate the unwanted oil and fluid components and then re-injected into the desired location. The most popular is fat augmentation of the buttocks or buttocks augmentation. This is also known as the Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL. Other locations that can be enhanced with your own fat include the breasts and facial areas.
The Procedure
Fat grafting procedures are done under general anesthetic in our AAAHC certified operating suites under the care of our board certified anesthesiologist. Collection of fat through Liposuction is targeted to unwanted areas such as the abdomen, hips, outer thighs, and back. In buttock augmentation, removal of unwanted fat from the waist, back, and abdomen is used to maximize the result and enhance the appearance of the newly augmented buttocks. This procedure can take from two to four hours, and involves small incisions to harvest the fat. These incisions are generally hidden in non-conspicuous locations. After processing, the fat is re-injected through multiple small incisions. Patients typically remain in our recovery room for one to two hours after the surgery.
The Recovery
The recovery from fat grafting to the buttocks, or a Brazilian Butt Lift, is generally about two weeks and the primary inconvenience is avoidance of direct pressure on the buttocks which can cause some of the fat to be reabsorbed. Specialized compression garments which prevent excess pressure on the buttock area are necessary. It is recommended that patients avoid sitting on hard surfaces and must utilize positioning techniques to avoid this. Pain after the procedure is minimal to moderate and easily controlled with oral pain medicine. The final result takes months to become fully apparent as some degree of swelling occurs and some degree of re-absorption of the injected fat is anticipated. The liposuction in these areas takes several months to completely reveal themselves.

FAQ
Q: Does the procedure need to be repeated?
A: Depending on the desired outcome, repeat procedures are sometimes necessary. There is a limit to how much fat can be injected safely. Excessive injection can overcome, the body’s ability to re-vascularize the fat so patients who desire significant improvements in projection sometimes will require a second procedure.
Q: What about buttock implants?
A: Buttock implants are useful in providing reshaping of the buttock. They are associated with significant complication rate and we at Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center do not perform them. This is not to say that an outstanding result cannot be achieved. We prefer to provide the safest techniques and feel that the complications outweigh the benefits.
