Am I a Good Candidate for Skin Grafting in Raleigh?

For patients who have undergone Mohs repair for skin cancer, skin grafting is a commonly used technique to obtain the best cosmetic results. We also treat patients who have undergone a serious injury where the wound is deep or wide enough that skin grafting is necessary. Other patients who should consider skin grafting would be those that have suffered from third degree burns where the skin may not rejuvenate itself in a timely manner.

The best way to know if you are a candidate for skin grafting in Raleigh is to contact our office to schedule your consultation.

How is Skin Grafting Performed?

The procedure for a skin graft will depend on the severity of the injury. The process involves the removal of skin from a donor site (often times the upper thigh or buttocks so the scar is hidden). In most cases, the skin graft is considered a split thickness graft in which the top two layers of skin are taken from the donor site.

The donor skin is then placed over the wound and held in place either by pressure or stitches. For 3 to 5 days the wound will be covered in sterile bandages to reduce any risk of infection.
